Immigration solicitors in UK cities
Open a city to find solicitors whose working week is mostly immigration, from visa extensions and settlement to citizenship and appeals. None of the specialties has city pages of its own. Within a city list, buttons pick out firms that take asylum cases, firms that help employers with sponsor licences and firms that handle work visas. Immigration law is the same across the UK, so a firm in any of its four nations can act for you.

Questions to settle before you instruct
Who is allowed to give immigration advice in the UK?
In general, only solicitors, barristers and legal executives regulated in the UK, and advisers registered with the Immigration Advice Authority, which used to be called the OISC. It is a criminal offence for anyone else to give immigration advice or services in the course of business. Check a solicitor on the SRA’s Solicitors Register or on the Scottish or Northern Irish law society’s search, and an adviser on the Immigration Advice Authority’s register.
What does an immigration solicitor charge?
Many quote a fixed fee for each application and charge separately for an appeal or an urgent request. Government application fees and the immigration health surcharge are set by the government and paid on top, so check what the quote includes. Firms in England and Wales that do immigration work other than asylum must publish their prices and what they cover on their websites. Compare like with like, and ask what happens if the application is refused.
Can a solicitor promise that my visa will be granted?
No. Decisions are made by the Home Office, and no solicitor can promise one. Be wary of anyone who says they have a special link with the Home Office or who asks for money to speed up a decision. A solicitor should explain the risks, the evidence you need and what the fee covers whatever the result.
Why does the expiry date of my current permission matter?
It often sets the timetable. Applications to extend or change status usually have to be made before your current permission runs out, and being late can affect your rights and later applications. If the date is close, say so when you ring a firm, and do not leave choosing one until the last week.
What do the asylum, sponsor licence and work visa buttons mean?
Asylum cases are claims for protection from persecution and are handled by firms with specific experience, some of them under legal aid contracts. A sponsor licence is the Home Office permission an employer needs before it can sponsor workers from abroad, and some firms act for employers. Work visas are applications by the worker, such as the Skilled Worker route. Each button picks out firms that say they do that kind of work.
